Ambassador Church has a Church Planting Residency Program that is a church planter training program. It has been designed for called and qualified church planters to complete prior to full-time church planting work. The ACP Residency aims to equip the resident by instilling in him the biblical convictions, and by providing opportunities to observe how these convictions are lived out in the life of the local church.

Time

The ACP Residency Program is a full-time one-year program based at Ambassador Church, Brea, CA. The program begins August 1 yearly and ends July 31 of the following year.

Qualifications

Applicants are required to submit a completed application with personal and pastoral references. Preference will be given to applicants with pastoral ministry experience and to those having completed a Master of Divinity or similar theological degree program.

Applicants will be screened, assessed and interviewed by the Church Planting Committee after submitting an application. Please click here to request an application.

Applications for the TCT Church Planting Residency Program are due by May 1 of each year.

Components of the Residency

The Residency program is made up of the following components:

• supervised ministry
• TBI seminars
• a mentoring relationship
• a year-end assessment and evaluation

Field Education Credit

The Residency program is structured such that it meets the requirements for Field Education typically required to receive a Master of Divinity degree.

The Situation

Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial group in the United States, with a population over 18.2 million in 2011 and projected to exceed 40.6 million (9% of U.S. population) by 2050.

Currently there are only 7,000 ethnic Asian churches and less than 250 English-speaking churches reaching the next generation of Asian Americans. As for multi-ethnic churches, less than 8% of American churches are multi-ethnically diverse (over 20% of a non-majority racial group).

That is not enough. It will take all kinds of churches to reach all kinds of people – particularly more multi-Asian and multi-ethnic churches to better reach the changing demographics in America and the world. Churches are more effective and more sustainable.

Existing churches need strategic training and new churches need to be launched. Contextualizing the Gospel is absolutely essential for all peoples to experience the grace and truth of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Indeed the harvest is plentiful and workers are few.

The Solution

Ambassador Network was launched in 2011 as a movement of multiplying, multiethnic, and missional churches. Ambassador Network provides comprehensive consultation, training, coaching, and equipping for new church plants and existing churches. (Ambassador Network is led by Pastor Ray Chang, with whom I served as an associate pastor at Ambassador Bible Church in metro Washington DC from 1997-2000; now we have another opportunity to partner again.)

I have accrued 20 years of ministry experience in resourcing multi-Asian and multi-ethnic churches as a strategist, networker, and thought leader. I serve a vital role at Ambassador Network in developing consultation, training, and coaching for church leaders locally and globally. Over the years, I’ve consistently heard that the top 2 needs of minority leaders are: #1, mentoring role models, and #2, resources. Philip Yung from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Philip Yung is currently at Ambassador Church for a church planting residency program and plans to go back to Vancouver in June of this year to gather his core and plan the launch of his church.

After establishing Ambassador Bible Church and returning to his native area of Southern California, Pastor Ray Chang was hired by First Evangelical Free in 2000 as their Pastor of Outreach with a passion to reach a church-going slice of Orange County – the young-adult children of first-generation Asian immigrants. While many Orange County Hispanics attend either Catholic or Pentecostal churches, Chinese and Korean immigrants flocked to North Orange County. In search of good schools, they founded large Asian-language evangelical churches throughout Fullerton and Anaheim.

Now, as the sons and daughters of those immigrants enter their 30s and 40s, many find themselves alienated from their parents’ formal, hierarchical Asian-language churches but culturally uncomfortable in largely white congregations. As a result, Pastor Ray began a Sunday morning Bible study at EV Free Fullerton which attracted a large number of young Asian-Americans. They had the conviction to avoid being defined by a race or culture but rather by a common passion to reaching all nationalities and cultures for Christ.

As a result, Pastors Dale Burke and Ray decided that the best way to foster the mission and vision God had given Ray was to plant a church. What followed was Ambassador Church, guided by the mission:

Our mission at Ambassador Church is to make and equip disciples of all nationalities to be Christ’s ambassadors to all the nations by loving God, one another and the world.

Since that time Ambassador Church has had three different facilities, adopted another church, has planted three churches, and continues to be passionate about being a Church that is Missional, Multi-ethnic, and Multiplying.

In the past few years, Ambassador Church has been actively engaged in developing young leaders, planting churches and consulting (assisting) other churches with a like-minded mission.  As this role is expanding, Ray decided to establish a non-profit ministry that would focus solely on these tasks. Rather than trying to put everything under the umbrella of the Ambassador Church, for the sake of ministry effectiveness, a separate entity was created in January 2011.

It is the mission of Ambassador Network to launch a movement of multiplying, multiethnic, and missional churches, both locally and globally.  To accomplish this mission, Ambassador Network will provide comprehensive consultation, training, coaching, and equipping for new church plants and existing churches.  Ambassador Network is not interested in simply producing a service for our clients. We believe in creating a long-term relationship with them so that we can partner with these church to multiply a movement that reaches every man, woman, and child with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
